3: Patty Mills

Patty Mills is certainly not the best name on this list, but with how bad New York’s point guard play has been over the years, Mills may be my favorite player of the three.

At 33, he’s on the wrong side of 30 and may cost the Knicks more than he’s actually worth, but he’s still an upgrade from choosing to go with Alec Burks at point guard.

Mills is on an expiring contract with a player option for next season worth $6.2 million. Maybe the Nets would rather spend that money elsewhere and will ask him to take a walk in the offseason.

If New York offered him a bit more stability over the next two seasons, maybe he’d take a two-year, $16 million contract to act as a stop-gap point guard for the Knicks until they find their long-term solution.

By no means do I think that Mills is the answer. He’ll certainly not be a part of the team if and when New York eventually wins a title, but the front office could do a whole lot worse at this spot as evidenced by this season.

He’s still averaging 11.5 points and 2.3 assists per game this year. Mills is a tremendous floor general and has a feel for the game that isn’t found in your everyday players.

He’s shooting 39.8% from deep and 82% from the charity stripe. As a band-aid, last resort type of signing, the Knicks would be lucky to grab Mills from the Nets.
