3: Caleb Love – North Carolina Tar Heels

Unlike the previous two players, Caleb Love projects as more of a second-round pick heading into the matchup against Duke.

Even with his last name being ‘Love’, he seems to be getting none of it when it comes to mock drafts. I’ve only come across his name once or twice across the 10 mocks that I found. With that being said, a strong performance this weekend could quickly change that.

Love is as much of a ‘Thibs’ style of point guard as you can find. He’s an aggressive, score-first guard who enjoys laying downhill and attacking the rim. He’s quick yet powerful and never shies away from contact in the painted area.

He’s also got the size you’d like out of a point guard in this day and age, standing at 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds. However, there are a few reasons why he’s barely getting mocked at all and may very well end up as an undrafted free agent if he declares for the draft.

Firstly, he’s wildly inconsistent on offense. Think of a very poor man’s version of J.R. Smith for example, and even when he’s on, he isn’t exactly scoring in bunches.

He’s also not the best playmaker. Sure, he can help collapse a defense and get open shots for his teammates when attacking the basket, but his offensive awareness needs improvement if he’s going to find any success at the next level.

Carelessness with the ball has also been an issue as of late. He’s averaging nearly a 1-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, which isn’t ideal.

Everyone has their faults and I get that. Even with his substantial downfalls, the kid is a fierce competitor.
