New York Knicks: Sims takes over for Noel

Nerlens Noel was one of the most important players on last year’s playoff team, providing an imposing shot-blocking ability while also stripping the ball away from unsuspecting opponents. When he was signed to a 2-year deal this offseason, many assumed that he would become one of the best backup centers in the Association.

However, injuries have taken a toll. Noel has appeared in just 25 of a possible 59 games this year due to various injuries and is currently dealing with a knee issue.

It could make sense for the Knicks front office and coaching staff to shut Noel down for the rest of this lottery-bound season so that he doesn’t reaggravate anything that could cause him to miss time next year.

This would also open up some playing time for rookie second-round pick Jericho Sims. Sims is an extremely raw prospect, as he has otherworldly athleticism but is often prone to smaller mistakes such as boxing out and defending in space.

It would be extremely beneficial for him to get reps at a professional level as he has dominated in the G League, albeit in a small sample size. In 3 games with the Westchester Knicks, Sims is averaging 14.0 points and 11.3 rebounds per game while shooting 72% from the field.

This season may not go down as a particularly memorable one in New York Knicks history, but the team has an opportunity to give valuable playing time to their trove of young talent which could help them in future seasons when they’re expected to return to the playoffs.
