3 Former Knicks that NY can bring back with the Hardship Exception
Former Knicks Player #3 — Damyean Dotson
Out of the three options in total, I think a Damyean Dotson return is a move Knicks fans would love to see the most. Dotson was a second round pick of the Knicks back in 2017 and found himself in the rotation by the season’s end.
His best season came in his sophomore year where he made 40 starts, averaged over 10 points per game and knocked down 37% of his threes. The guard position is the thinnest for the Knicks currently as the team again, is without RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Quentin Grimes. With this being the case, it definitely does not hurt to sign Dotson to a 10-day deal and see how much he can produce.
The 27-year-old is currently playing for the San Antonio Spurs G-League affiliate and coming back to the Knicks would be an easy decision for him to make.
Damyean has had a 30 point game at MSG and has proven on multiple occasions that he has the ability to be a high volume shooter when he’s on the mark. It must be re-emphasized that the Knicks can’t afford to play with a 9-man rotation for an extended period of time and Dotson is in mid-season form and ready to play.
Even with the successful stints, Dotson was not brought back in the end because of his lack of consistency. With Tom Thibodeau as the head coach rather than David Fizdale or Jeff Hornacek, Damyean could end up playing the best basketball of his short career when it’s all said and done and I personally believe it would be really fun to see him get another shot in New York.
In reality, the Knicks need to make a move of some kind to keep everyone fresh. If one of these three players gets the nod, I think it could be cool for Knicks fans to get a small dose of nostalgia as they watch the team try and turn things back around.
