Chaos is emerging within the New York Knicks and throughout the NBA. Everyday teams are having countless members enter health and safety protocols forcing them to play with tightened rotations and give minutes to players who haven’t had much experience at all. With this being the case, a new rule that has become continuously talked about throughout the league is the now infamous “Hardship Exception.”

This rule allows teams to exceed the 15-man roster limit when they have players who are injured or sick for longer than 2 weeks.

We already saw the Brooklyn Nets, who have seven players out in health and safety protocols, take advantage of this by signing former Knicks guard Langston Galloway to a 10-day contract. Going back to New York, the Knicks have started to have some COVID troubles of their own. It started on Sunday, December 10th when RJ Barrett and Obi Toppin were late scratches because of protocol.

Then after Sunday’s game, Quentin Grimes was ruled out, and before you could blink both Kevin Knox and Immanuel Quickley were also sent away from the team. With the Knicks having five players out for a while, the hardship exception is something they might want to look into and take advantage of.

As fun as it is to watch Miles McBride kill it off the bench and Taj Gibson to put in work deep in the trenches, it’s asking a lot for these players to play over 30 minutes consistently in a stretch with a lot of ‘must win’ games. Until the roster is back at full health, Leon Rose has got to evaluate the current list of NBA free agents and decide on someone to help fill the void for the time being.

Here’s three former players of the team the Knicks can potentially bring back while they currently struggle with COVID protocol.
