Knicks Rumors: Does a John Wall trade make any sense?
By Adam Kester
Is a Knicks trade for John Wall even possible?
This is the real conversation when it comes to a John Wall trade.
John Wall is on the books for 44 million this season and then, next season, he has a player option for 47 million, the last year of his deal.
It’s a mind-blowing amount of money and it’s a contract that has become infamous around the league.
Sometimes, you make deals for players on contracts like this work. When you have giant expiring deals, you can be flexible in taking on larger, long-term contracts.
In the Knicks case, they don’t have any large expiring contracts this season. Most of the team is either locked up for 2-3 years or still on their rookie deals.
Unless the Knicks are deciding to blow up their roster, it’s hard to find how a deal gets done.
In terms of John Walls’ value, while he’s still a good player at a premium position, his contract is so obscene that it really makes him a net-negative asset. The Knicks shouldn’t be giving up anything valuable in a straight-up swap for John Wall.
If a deal would somehow fall into place, it would need another team involved.
There isn’t a ton of incentive for New York to part with any key young player — Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin, Quentin Grimes, in return for John Wall.
This trade may be unlikely but the rumor does bring up the question, is New York’s current point guard situation enough to get them further in the playoffs than they were a season ago?
