The NY Knicks have depth

Trading Mitchell Robinson would be a great idea also due to the fact that the Knicks are an extremely deep team, especially at the center position. If the NY Knicks and Robinson were to part ways, Nerlens Noel would play that role just as good if not better and for a far cheaper price.
As stated before, the Knicks actually had a better defensive rating with Robinson off the floor, which further shows that Nerlens Noel and veteran big man Taj Gibson have done a great job filling in during his absence.

According to Basketball Reference, last season, Nerlens Noel averaged 2.2 blocks per game which is everything that head coach Tom Thibodeau could ask for out of his rim protector. He also defended opposing teams best big man at a high level all season while Robinson was out.

Also, being that today’s NBA is such a guard dominant league, the center position has proven to be the most interchangeable, hence paying significant money to the position can be detrimental.
This was shown with the Utah Jazz after giving center Rudy Gobert a massive contract.
They are consistently a very good team but find themselves not able to take their team to the next level come playoff time.

Giving Gobert such a big contract at such an interchangeable position is the reason why the Jazz have not had the money to give star player Donovan Mitchell a co-star.

If the Knicks choose to do the same with Mitchell Robinson, they may not only have a hard time extending RJ Barrett but will also have a hard time finding a second star to pair with Julius Randle.
Allowing Nerlens Noel to keep the starting center role at a cheaper price than Robinson opens up the financial cap room to improve the team while also not downgrading defensively either.
