Should the NY Knicks consider a trade for Coby White?

The fact that the Bulls and Knicks play tonight is just a coincidence in regards to this trade target.

Apparently, Coby White could be made available via trade soon and the Knicks could very well consider him a target, and I’ll explain why.

First and foremost, White is still recovering from an offseason surgery he had to repair a torn labrum, so he’s not expected back until sometime in November at the earliest.

This deal could only be explored later on down the road.

The Bulls certainly have a strong starting 5 this year but their bench is near the bottom of the league and Coby White returning isn’t likely to change that much.

Per NBA.com, the Bulls rank 28th in the league in bench scoring with 24.3 points per game as this is being written.

The Bulls need depth essentially anywhere they can get it, which is why they would consider this deal.

To be clear, two of the three future second-rounders would be coming from the Knicks with the last one coming from OKC.

The Knicks lose a bit defensively when swapping out Burks for White, but they make up for it in a young player with a higher ceiling that Thibs can help develop.

You might say “but Bradley, that would mean the Knick would have 3 guards playing off the bench” and you’d be right.

But how is that much different than it is today?

Alec Burks has been somewhat forced into a role that he hasn’t played in his career and that’s the Small Forward position.

The NBA is a guard-dominant league anyhow, so it could certainly work.

Plus, if the Knicks want to optimize Obi’s production, they’ll run most of the bench offense through him as they did at Dayton where, you guessed it, he also played with 3 guards on the court at one time.

Lastly, both RJ and Evan Fournier could slip into a role similar to Kelly Oubre’s from last year where they start the game, come off the court first and come back in with the 2nd units, and they’d be responsible for playing the wing instead of White.

This would give the Knicks an extra injection of offense for the starters and the bench.

With all of that said, this isn’t gonna happen for too many reasons to even discuss but it’s a fun idea nonetheless.
