Should the New York Knicks trade for Deandre Ayton?
New York Knicks: Why The Suns would accept this deal
The Phoenix Suns are at risk of getting a similar ultimatum that Kristaps Porzingis gave the Knicks less than two years ago.
If Deandre Ayton is truly unhappy in Phoenix, he can take the ultimate gamble next season.
Ayton can accept his Qualifying Offer that’s worth around 14 million for one year, then become an unrestricted free agent, and be able to choose what team he wants to play for with the Suns having no way to keep him unless he re-signs.
It is hard to believe that Ayton would do this, as if he gets hurt, he could lose out on a long-term contract.
As mentioned when talking about the New York Knicks floor spacing and how it could take another step forward, Ayton adds to that for New York, while the Suns get a more athletic DeAndre Jordan in Mitchell Robinson.
Though not of Ayton’s talent, Robinson will be a wonderful lob threat for Chris Paul, and he could average around 14 points 11 rebounds and 3 blocks in Phoenix.
Obi Toppin adds another lob threat for Paul while being a new player this season on opening day. Kevin Knox makes salaries work, and there was a time where he was the NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month.
Acquiring only two draft picks for the 1st overall pick three years ago does not seem ideal, but Ayton is destroying his own value as much as humanly possible at the moment, and getting some value is better than none.
The Suns can reach the same level of success in the current moment with this package while also still having young players who fit franchise player Devin Booker’s timeline.
The Suns will lose Ayton, but gaining value is important, especially since extending Mitchell Robinson will cost much less.
