Why the New York Knicks should trade for Ayton

A few months ago, I mentioned that Mitchell Robinson is still vital to the team despite his injuries last season.

Robinson’s rebounding and shot-blocking potential are incredible, and the Knicks have always looked better when he is on the court. However, it’s impossible to deny at this moment that Deandre Ayton is a better player than Robinson.

Mitch would probably have to be included in the trade, as would others. A trade for Ayton could probably look something like this:

Knicks Receive: Deandre Ayton, Jalen Smith

Suns Receive: Mitchell Robinson, Obi Toppin, Kevin Knox, 2022 First Round Pick (via NY), 2022 Second Round Pick (via NY), 2023 First Round Pick (Top Ten Protected) (Via Dallas) 2024 Second Round pick (via Detroit)

Ayton fits the Knicks’ slower-paced, teamwork offense. Ayton, like Robinson, is one of the most athletic centers in the NBA and can basically fill Robinson’s role while having more fundamental skill on offense.

As mentioned when discussing three offseason takeaways, the Knick offense looks like it is on an elite level. To add someone who has the talent that Ayton has on offense can work wonders, especially if he can continue to improve.

Centers typically take longer to develop than guards and forwards. The human body really is not supposed to be 7 feet tall, and for young guys who are that big, it can take a few years to be fully acclimated and know how to use your body to your advantage.

The biggest reason the Knicks should make a deal for Ayton is I’d be willing to bet that he did not hit his peak season at 22 years old.

A 22-year-old former first overall pick that has shown promise usually has a higher value than Ayton. The Knicks have the assets to take the gamble on him and still be fine if it does not work out.
