New York Knicks Frontcourt: Nerlens Noel

A name that had little expectations when he first signed with the New York Knicks but grew into a key part of last year’s team.

Nerlens Noel was one of the unsung heroes of the Knicks’ “big 15” last season.

What We Know

There’s a pretty good grasp on what kind of player Nerlens Noel is at this point in his NBA career. A rim-running, rim-protecting center who excels on defense.

While Noel doesn’t have the physicality and strength to match up with some of the league’s best centers, his instincts, technique, and wingspan make him one of the best rotating shot blockers in the entire NBA.

He’s an active defender who can fill in as the team’s starting center when needed.

What To Expect

Nerlens Noel has already been listed as doubtful for the Knicks’ home opener against the Boston Celtics. His knee injury appears to be minor but it could sideline him for a few games.

Heading into the season, the rumblings were that Nerlens Noel may start the first few games at center because Mitchell Robinson was still recovering from injury. Now it seems to be the other way around.

There shouldn’t be a whole lot of change with Nerlens Noel’s role and expectations. As someone who comes off the bench and plays around 20 minutes per game, you can’t ask for much more.

Noel typically runs with the faster-paced Knicks 2nd unit, and his defensive presence in the middle can help anchor a bench unit that can be susceptible to defensive errors.

The top 5 leaders in defensive box plus/minus last season?

  1. Nerlens Noel
  2. Draymond Green
  3. Giannis Antetokounmpo
  4. Jimmy Butler
  5. Rudy Gobert

The Knicks re-signed Noel to a multi-year deal for a reason. He’s proven to be one of the better backup centers in the league and can continue to be exactly that for NY this season.
