The Definitive New York Knicks Roster Breakdown: The Backcourt

New York Knicks Backcourt: Quentin Grimes
The Knicks first-round draft pick might see some minutes sooner rather than later.
What We Know
Grimes is a wing prospect whose hardnosed playstyle should blend right in with the Thibodeau-led Knicks culture.
On a fully healthy Knicks team, it may be hard for him to get significant playing time. Still, his perimeter defense might get him some minutes with the 2nd unit.
What To Expect
Q’s defense was on full display in the New York Knicks final preseason game. He’s a focused, strong, athletic defender with good size. This isn’t a defender with raw tools, this is a technical defender who’s going to be coached up by a defensive guru. Iron sharpens iron.
Given the plethora of options on the wing, there’s no reason to expect big numbers from Quentin Grimes in his rookie season.
Still, this is someone who can contribute right away. Grimes gets labeled as a 3&D prospect, which one hand is a great label to have. On the other hand, it almost puts a limit on his ceiling.
The important distinction to make is that right now, in 2021, Grimes is a 3&D player in the NBA. He’s going to play a lot off-ball with Julius Randle, Barrett, Walker, Rose, Fournier, and everyone else. He’ll be a great complementary piece.
However, there is absolutely reason to believe Grimes can’t grow as a ball-handler and all-around scorer. He’s flashed a lot as a scorer who can create his own shot.
The Knicks may have gotten a legit 2-way player in Quentin Grimes. This year is just the beginning of his journey.
