New York Knicks Backcourt: Kemba Walker
The hype is real for Kemba Walker and his return to New York.
What We Know:
Walker is taking over as the team’s starting point guard, replacing Elfrid Payton from last season. The Knicks acquired Walker in the 11th hour of free agency as the result of his contract being bought out by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
There is still some question as to how Walker would start the season, but it’s clear now that he will take over as the team’s starter.
Walker brings an entirely new dimension to the starting unit. An elite ball-handler, and seasoned NBA point guard, Walker looked the part in his preseason debut.
What To Expect:
Kemba Walker looked like the same Kemba Walker that NBA fans have seen for a decade now. Still, fans should temper expectations. The season hasn’t started yet.
Walker’s knee condition is supposed to be degenerative and it could hamper him at certain points throughout the season. Resting on back-to-backs, long road trips, it could pop up at any time.
This is all just assumption — Walker’s need to potentially rest at certain points in the season doesn’t come close to outweighing how impactful he will be for the Knicks this season.
When he’s on the court, Kemba Walker should look like… Kemba Walker.
We saw it in the preseason. Nasty handles, shooting off the dribble, it’s all as advertised. The key is to manage his workload.
If he’s managed correctly and is fully healthy for the playoffs, watch out. Walker will make his impact known in the regular season, but for the Knicks to take the next step, they need him healthy for the playoffs.
