Should the NY Knicks give Aamir Simms the last Two-Way spot?

Aamir Simms was the only player of the 3 I’ll be discussing to get any burn during last night’s game against Detroit.

I’m assuming it had more to do with the fact that Taj, while he played terrifically, did get himself into some foul trouble pretty early on.

He had 4 fouls before the first half even ended.

So instead of giving extended minutes to Jericho Sims, I guess Thibs wanted to see what he had in Aamir Simms in a game that didn’t count.

Simms is a Forward/Center out of Clemson and came to the Knicks this offseason as an undrafted free agent.

He spent 4 years with the Tigers and improved in virtually every stat possible year over year.

Simms actually did a great job defending Detroit’s Kelly Olynyk, especially on the perimeter even though Simms is a little undersized to play the 5 in the NBA.

Standing at 6’8 245lbs, after watching him play in person I’d feel confident in having him guard opposing backup SF’s, PF’s, and even smaller C’s who base their offense more in the mid-range and around the perimeter.

But against bigger-bodied 5’s he’d get pummeled down-low.

He’s a good rebounder and overall a good defender, plus he moves well laterally for a bigger guy, but his offensive incapabilities paired with the fact that the Knicks currently have 4 very solid Centers on the roster, the 4th being Jericho Sims who’s on the other two-way contract, I just can’t see the team deciding to grat him the final spot.

This would mean the Knicks are going into the season with 3 PF’s and 4 C’s on the roster (Julius Randle, Obi Toppin, Kevin Knox, Mitch, Nerlens, Taj, and Sims) while also bringing along another guy who would have to play one of those two positions.

I’d like to see the Knicks develop Simms a bit more, especially on the offensive side of the ball down in the G-League before he gets a chance to get any minutes in the NBA.

He was a decent shooter in college, granted on a relatively low volume of shots…so if they get him shooting well at the NBA level while also expanding his mid-range and inside scoring abilities, I could see Simms as a part of the Knicks’ roster in a year or two for sure.

But not today, unfortunately.
