New York Knicks: Obi Toppin’s shooting percentages

Coming into the league, there were some pretty lofty expectations that Obi Toppin could be a prolific shooter.

Toppin has a nice fluid motion on his shot and posted a 39 percent 3-point shooting percentage in his last year at Dayton. He did only take 2.6 attempts per game.

I think it was more of a work in progress than people thought, but it’s no reason to be discouraged. Obi Toppin is going to be a stretch-4 at the NBA level.

In his rookie season, he shot just 30.6 percent from three. Almost all of his attempts were catch-and-shoot looks.

Obi Toppin is always going to be at his best in transition. I fully expect him to get plenty of catch-and-shoot looks playing off of Derrick Rose, Alec Burks, and Immanuel Quickley.

There’s some room to be a more prolific shooter in the half-court as well.

Obi Toppin was actually a very good mid-range shooter last season — He ranked in the 90th percentile of all forwards in “long mid-range” shot percentage and in the 77th in all mid-range shots. He shot 47 percent from mid-range and just over 73 percent from the free throw line.

Toppin will be playing a 2nd consecutive year in the same role and there is going to be a new level of comfort for him. Expect him to get his 3-point percentage up from last season.
