Would Patrick Ewing help the NY Knicks win a title?

In this scenario, the Knicks bring on Big Pat and lose Mitchell Robinson.

I’ve been on the record saying I believe Mitch is somewhat expendable for a number of reasons, but with the caveat that the team upgrades at the 5.

Otherwise, I wouldn’t want him to go anywhere.

In this case, the Knicks get arguably the best Knicks player of all time and a massive upgrade at Robinson’s position.

Mind you, the Knicks receive a 27-year-old Ewing who averaged 28.6 points, 4 blocks, 10.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while shooting 55% from the field.

Other than being more of a lob threat (huge maybe), Pat towers over Mitchell Robinson in every single category.

He brings size, strength, and athleticism the Knicks haven’t had at the center position pretty much since Pat was playing here.

By today’s standards, Pat could even be a little bit of a stretch-5, spacing the floor a bit with his mid-range ability.

Aside from the glaring discrepancy in their scoring ability, with Ewing averaging around 20 points per more game than Mitch…the two areas I think the Knicks would benefit the most from are the enhanced playmaking abilities coming from the 5-spot and rebounding.

Mitch is a good…not a great defensive rebounder but Pat was just elite in that department. In fact, he averaged over 10.5 total rebounds per game for 8 straight seasons.

Lastly, Ewing was never really tasked with passing the ball very much as he was almost always the focal point on the offensive side with every team he’d ever played with until his twilight years.

But if you look up ‘Patrick Ewing flashy pass compilation’ on youtube, you’re in store for some crafty playmaking out of a mountain of a man.

Now, when it comes to whether the Knicks would win a title or not…I know they’d be a much-improved team and would be super competitive every year but this league is run by wings and guards, and without an elite player at one of those positions, teams with Superstar big-men are too easily neutralized by elite perimeter scoring.

I wanna say the Knicks would make the ECF or the Finals nearly every season with Pat but as far as bringing home a title, my gut says no if they’re going up against teams like Brooklyn and Los Angeles every season.

If the Knicks had just one All-Star caliber wing or guard to pair with Pat, the Knicks would win multiple titles in my opinion.
