Nerlens Noel is likely to be the NY Knicks’ backup Center

I figured Noel was a goner once last season ended because I just couldn’t wrap my head around the Knicks paying big money to both Nerlens Noel and Mitchell Robinson.

But that’s why I’m not a GM.

Noel signed a 3-year, $27.7 million extension with a team option on the final season a few weeks back.

The signing may very well make Mitch expendable OR the Knicks could use Noel as leverage at the negotiation table with Mitch because they wouldn’t be hard-pressed to sign him if he does in fact ask for more than they’re comfortable giving him.

Both times Robinson went down with injuries last season, Nerlens Noel really stepped up and played his tail off.

He truly earned the extension he was given.

Things seemed to fall apart a bit when tasked with defending the much bigger and more physical Clint Capela during the series with the Hawks in the playoffs.

But still, he’s one of the best backup centers in the league, who’s probably capable of starting on a number of teams.

If Noel ends up the starting center to start the season, I wouldn’t be surprised regardless of Mitch’s health situation.

But, if Mitch does agree to some sort of extension, I would have to imagine that Noel will be moved before his contract is up.

Until then, I hope he’s able to replicate the same success he had with the team last year for as long as he is here.
