New York Knicks Summer League Grades: Quentin Grimes

It took a minute for Quentin Grimes to get going on the offensive end, but he was still solid in his role in every game of the Summer League nonetheless.

Versus the Raptors, Pacers, and Lakers, Grimes shot just 3-11 (3-8 from three), 2-10 (2-6 from three), and 3-9 (2-8 from three) respectively. However, in those games, as well as every other game, Grimes made an impact across the board. Grimes’ defense was great as advertised. He was strong playing on-ball defense and he flashed the ability to guard positions 1 through 3 while getting in the passing lanes. His rebounding has also been very impressive. He grabbed 6 rebounds in a game three times, as well as 7 boards vs Detroit and 9 vs Los Angeles.

It was against the Pistons when Grimes finally put the 3 in “3 and D” and had proper success on offense. Quentin finished with 15 points (6-10, 3-6 from three), 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. After that mini-breakout performance, Grimes spent the final two Summer League games looking nearly unstoppable. Against the Cavaliers, he scored 28 points. Overall he shot ok, hit 8 of 20 shots, but he was great with his 3-ball and with getting to the line. Grimes finished 6-14 from deep and 6 of 7 free throws.

Lastly, Grimes had his best game against the Hawks. He poured in 26 points in his most efficient performance of the Summer League. He was 10-17 from the field and went 6-12 from downtown. He even went on his own 9-0 run to start the game by hitting three straight long balls.

Although Grimes had several poor shooting games, when he was hot, he was on fire. Grimes 3 and D potential is very exciting, and he gets bonus points for being able to leave his mark in every game by filling up the stat sheet and being active on defense.
