NY Knicks: The 5 Superstars who are destined to join NY in the future
Do you think Donovan Mitchell would ever demand a trade to the NY Knicks?
Soooo, I know it’s a little too late now but I was TOTALLY Team Spida when the Knicks had the 8th pick back in the 2017 NBA Draft.
But of course, Phil Jackson needed his defensive-minded point guard that could run his archaic triangle offense…so lucky us…we got Frank Ntilikina instead!
The fact that Mitchell was born in Westchester, New York…or the fact that his father played for the Mets…or the fact that his dad is STILL employed by the Mets…were all not good enough reasons to take a flier on the hometown kid.
Thanks, Phil.
But anywho, all is not yet lost, Knicks fans…Donovan may very well come home after all.
Utah finished the 2020-21 season with the best record in the Western Conference and was still bounced in the Conference Semifinals by the Clippers.
Aside from that, Mitchell had expressed some frustration when the team decided to bench him in the first round of the playoffs against Memphis.
Between the team not letting him play when he felt they needed him most alongside the Jazz going up 2-0 over the Clippers all to just lose the series, Mitchell may very well be looking for a way to leave the organization sooner than later.
The Jazz have a really good team. Not a great team…just really good.
The problem is that they play in Utah. No one wants to go play in Utah by choice. At least not stars who have brands that transcend the sport of basketball at least.
When your next best player is a traditional center like Rudy Gobert and your third-best player is Jordan Clarkson…it’s gonna be hard to compete in the playoffs.
So say he does leave, why pick the Knicks?
Besides being his hometown team, there are a few guys currently within the Knicks’ front office that have strong ties to Spida.
For starters, Walt Perrin who is the current Knicks Assistant GM played a huge role in drafting a lot of the stars that have played in Utah over the last 15+ years…most notably Donovan Mitchell.
Supposedly Perrin was the one who essentially forced Utah to make the trade with Denver to draft Spida back in 2017.
In addition, Knicks Associate Head Coach Johnny Bryant spent time in Utah prior to making his way over to New York and Mitchell has been very vocal about what Bryant meant to him when he first came into the league and how much he’s helped in his development.
It may be a while before any of this can actually happen as Mitchell just recently signed a supermax extension, but we just saw James Harden get traded with 2 years left on his deal…so it could be sooner than we think.
