New York Knicks: RJ Barrett Stats Projection 2021-22

  • 80 Games Played
  • 34.8 Minutes Per Game
  • 18.6 Points Per Game
  • 3.3 Assists Per Game
  • 6.3 Rebounds Per Game
  • 1.2 Steals Per Game
  • 0.3 Blocks Per Game
  • 45.8% FG %

  • 76.0% FT %

We saw RJ Barrett take a big leap from his rookie to his sophomore season, and while these don’t seem like a big increase in traditional per-game stats, I do expect Barrett’s efficiency to take another noticeable jump.

Similarly to the argument that Fournier will play the 2nd biggest role on the team due to his contract, you could say that RJ Barrett may actually see a decrease in his stats from 2020-21 because he’ll be behind both Kemba and Fournier in the offensive pecking order.

I actually think RJ’s numbers, especially his efficiency, will only benefit from the new-look roster.

He’s going to look great playing off of Fournier and Walker and I expect him to be taking a higher volume of 3-pointers this season.

You have to factor in that Barrett just seemed to be getting better as the season progressed. His at-the-rim finishing was still poor, but you saw some flashes of not just stronger finishing but more adept finishing close to the basket.

Little mid-range pullups, stepbacks — Barrett is starting to figure out how to play to his strengths and find his favorite spots on the floor. It’s going to start to translate into higher efficiency both off-ball and with the ball in his hands.

The consistency is going to start coming for RJ Barrett in year 3. You could say Tom Thibodeau likes to lean on his veterans, but really, I think the more accurate description is that he likes to lean on his “Thibs guys”.

Year 3 Jimmy Butler, who only averaged 13 points per game, was playing 38.7 minutes under Tom Thibodeau in Chicago. I think we’re going to start seeing a similar thing develop with RJ Barrett, where he becomes such a durable and integral part of the New York Knicks’ on-court identity that you’ll rarely see him off the court.
