The NY Knicks introduced Evan Fournier in a press conference earlier today, but we also got some more details on his contract and how New York acquired him.

We have seen some updated notes on contracts float around in the past few weeks since they were first reported, such as Alec Burks, Fournier, Nerlens Noel, and Derrick Rose all having team options on the final year of their contracts.

NY Knicks: Team acquired draft picks along with Evan Fournier

According to SNY’s Ian Begley, the Knicks will receive a pair of future 2nd round picks from Boston and will send them cash considerations as a part of the Evan Fournier deal.

While two future 2nd round picks may not seem like a huge coup, the fact that the team was able to gain a few extra picks in the future comes as a welcome surprise for a player who we all thought the team simply signed as an unrestricted free agent.

Boston will receive a 17 million dollar trade exception which is important for them should they go out and attempt a big trade later on this season.

For the NY Knicks, this is what appears to be a recurring trend for this front office — shrewd maneuvering of draft capital and cap space while continuing to develop and grow a winning culture.

New York has been able to boost their roster while still having a surplus of draft picks. Their aforementioned team options that are attached to multiple players’ contracts make them all very moveable contracts in the future.

In Evan Fournier, the Knicks are acquiring a ball-handler, 3-level scorer, and playmaker on the wing that should instantly boost their offense from last season. Fournier averaged over 17 points per game, shooting 45.% from the field and over 41% 3 last season with the Celtics and Orlando Magic.

Fournier was a popular trade deadline target. Someone who NY would have to give up draft picks to acquire. Now, they use their cap flexibility to now only sign him in free agency but get draft picks in the process.

In the past, if new contract details were revealed for the Knicks, they would have to worry if what they were about to read was some sort of player option or poison pill clause in the deal.

Now it seems like whenever new details emerge, they’re about team options, opt-out clauses and extra draft picks that were acquired.
