New York Knicks: The bigs are dominating

The New York Knicks have started an extremely athletic frontcourt through their two summer league contests, and the results have been encouraging.

That frontcourt includes Obi Toppin at power forward, last year’s 8th overall pick who showed flashes of offensive firepower in his limited minutes. There’s also Texas center Jericho Sims, the 58th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft who recently signed a two-way contract with New York.

Toppin dropped 22 points and 9 rebounds in their win, including an extremely impressive 3-6 from behind the arc. If he can connect on threes at a higher rate than his 30.6% mark as a rookie, then it helps open up the entire offense.

Through two games he’s averaging 23.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting 44% from the field.

Sims turned in one of the best highlights of the entire tournament with his ridiculous alley-oop in the team’s first contest. While he didn’t have any jaw-dropping dunks against the Pacers, he still turned in another quality outing.

The 22-year old rookie recorded 8 points and 9 rebounds on Monday, going 4-4 from the floor. He’s averaging 10.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks through two games while shooting a perfect 10-10 on his field-goal attempts.

Sims is looking like another draft steal for the Knicks, and he’ll provide valuable depth at the center position once the regular season comes around.
