New York Knicks — Grading the pick: Quentin Grimes
By Adam Kester
New York Knicks — Quentin Grimes value grade: C-
Quentin Grimes was, for most, a fringe-first round prospect. Here’s how he stacked up on some prominent big boards:
The Athletic (Sam Vecenie) — 38th overall
The Ringer (Kevin O’Connor) — 41st overall
Bleacher Report (Jonathan Wasserman) — 30th overall
On my big board, I had Grimes 35th.
Now I don’t want this to just be poo-pooing on Grimes and where the Knicks took him because I actually think I see the vision behind the pick, and why they took him where they did. He’s a really tough kid who could prove to be a great player for a long time.
There may have been a ton of more talented guards and shot creators on the board such as Ayo Dosunmu, Bones Hyland, Cam Thomas, Sharife Cooper, Miles McBride, and Jared Butler, but really, there weren’t many prospects of Quentin Grimes’ mold on the board.
Grimes is a pretty classic 3&D prospect. He’s a great catch and shooter who’s a competitive defender, and his size should project him to succeed in the NBA. New York recognized the drop-off in talent of a similar player-types to Grimes (3&D wings), and they decided to nab him while they could.
It seems pretty obvious that when the New York Knicks were on the clock at 19 and 21, they simply didn’t like the value of the guys available, so they traded down, and took a pretty safe prospect in Quentin Grimes.
How does Grimes fit in with the Thibodeau and the Knicks?
