NY Knicks: Collin Sexton traded to New York in recent B/R piece
By Mark Nilon
The 2020-21 campaign has been officially over for the NY Knicks for a little longer than a month now and, just like most offseasons, fans and media alike are all buzzing about which big names the franchise could try and scoop up this offseason.
For most, the ideal scenario would be to see New York utilize their potential total of $53 million in spending power this summer to try and land one of the top-billed talents in this year’s free agency class, be it the likes of Kawhi Leonard and DeMar DeRozan or a savvy veteran guard who can man the one as they look to build off of their recent team success.
However, there are some who believe the trade route may be a realistic option for the Knickerbockers, which, naturally, has made many ponder on a few potential deals they could look to make prior to next season’s tip-off.
Of late, perhaps the most popular name linked to the team as a potential trade target is Collin Sexton, who has been reported as being “very available” for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Just a few short days ago, the folks at Bleacher Report went about and listed the young guard as being a “surprise trade target” for the NY Knicks to consider.
Soon after, the B/R team struck again on the topic and concocted a trade that would land Sexton in New York.
The proposed trade package reads as follows:
Citing the team’s need for an upgrade at floor general as well as more scoring options to surround the team’s core with, writer, Zach Buckley, believes that sending away the oft-forgotten former top-10 pick in Kevin Knox along with two draft picks (a first and a second) is the way to go for the NY Knicks:
"The Knicks need a point guard, a scorer and a shot creator to bulk up their roster and take some pressure off Julius Randle and RJ Barrett. Sexton checks every box, and his shortcomings as a playmaker would be easier to manage since Randle and Barrett are already ball-movers. Sexton, who averaged 24.3 points this season, would provide quite the counterpunch for defenses that throw the kitchen sink at Randle."
At just 22-years-old, Sexton went about and posted stellar per-game averages of 24.3 points, 4.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and a steal on 48 percent shooting from the floor and 37 percent shooting from deep.
Though we’ve been hesitant to give away the farm for the highly talented, yet still raw combo guard, this proposed trade scenario is arguably no more than a chicken coop, especially considering the Knicks still get to keep the 21st overall pick in this year’s draft.
There’s a lot to like about bringing Collin Sexton to the Big Apple, and, if available, this deal should be strongly considered by Leon Rose and co.
