NY Knicks: 3 veteran point guards to target this offseason
By Mark Nilon
This offseason, when it comes to the free agency market, the NY Knicks could be one of the busiest teams in the entire association.
After their surprising and encapsulating regular-season run that notched them their first playoff berth since 2013, New York looks somewhat similar to how the Brooklyn Nets were perceived not two offseason ago after their rise from the ashes-esque campaign that, ultimately, intrigued marquee free agents to flock their way.
Though we’re not banking on the idea that a Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving caliber player will make their way to the Big Apple this summer (though anything’s possible), with a potential total of $53 million in cap space, the Knickerbockers will financially be in the running with virtually every other organization for any of this year’s talents.
That said, just because a player may be top-billed, it doesn’t automatically mean they should be a team’s top target.
When it comes to a team like the Knicks, with the core they currently have, perhaps the most important position to address in free agency is point guard. On top of this, considering how young of a squad they are, targeting a veteran at the one may be in their best interest.
Today, we discuss 3 seasoned point guards the NY Knicks should strongly consider pursuing in free agency:
NY Knicks veteran point guard target No. 1) Goran Dragic
Not only were the NY Knicks lacking in sound overall point guard play this past season, but, as a unit, they also were not all that productive from long-range.
Yes, fans will automatically point out the fact that New York ranked third in the entire association in 3-point percentage at .392, but as a unit they found themselves placing just 21st in 3-point makes and 27th in such shots attempted.
A guy like Goran Dragic can help out on both of these aforementioned fronts, as he’s a former All-Star who has made a name for himself as a steady presence at the one while also boasting a 36 percent 3-point shooting clip for his career.
This past season, in year 13, the veteran guard went on to post impressive averages of 13.4 points and 4.4 assists per game on 37 percent shooting from downtown.
At this point in his career, a guy like Dragic won’t command too hefty of a price in free agency, but could certainly prove to be a tremendous add for a team in need of a quality option for their backcourt rotation.
If the NY Knicks would prefer keeping their cap flexibility through next summer while also bolstering their point guard position during this one, targeting a guy like Goran Dragic might be a smart move to make.
