NY Knicks: Luca Vildoza ready for starring role in 2021 Olympics
By Adam Kester
Newly signed NY Knicks point guard Luca Vildoza will be one of the leaders of the Argentina Men’s National Basketball Team at the upcoming Summer Olympics.
Vildoza has dealt with plenty of pressure in his young professional basketball career, but these next few months could his most significant yet.
2021 Olympics will be the first taste of Luca Vildoza for Knicks fans
Unlike a lot of undrafted overseas players who are able to break into the NBA later in their career, at 25-years-old, Luca Vildoza has yet to hit his prime.
Vildoza has already represented his country on some big stages, including the 2019 FIBA World cup where Argentina finished as runners-up to Spain.
Here he is in 2021 preparing to be a focal point of Argentina’s offense.
Vildoza is joined by fellow NBA players Facundo Campazzo and Gabriel Deck, along with 2020 NBA draft pick Leandro Bolmaro. The guard duo of Campazzo and Vildoza is going to have to do a lot of the heavy lifting on offense, and a lot of the scoring responsibility could fall onto Vildoza.
Luca Vildoza’s performance is not important solely because he is a member of the Knicks, but it’s heightened by the fact that he’s a potential lead guard – a position that has had Knicks fans in constant debate about how to improve for the future.
New York’s point guard situation is shrouded in the unknown, but maybe, just maybe, the answer is on their roster. He’s had some silky-smooth highlights make the rounds on Knicks’ social media.
There’s a reason why New York seemed so pressed to sign Vildoza, even if they knew he would never make an appearance in the playoffs.
Another guard who can facilitate and create their own shot is something that New York could really use.
The question that will begin to be answered in these Olympics is: How will those point guard skills look against NBA competition?
We’re about to find out. Argentina plays their first game against France on July 25th.
