NY Knicks: The path to becoming a Superteam this summer
By Max Hoover
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The NY Knicks have a semi-realistic path to creating a super team for next season.
Last week on Twitter I shared that I thought the Knicks should only entertain a Damian Lillard trade if it included adding another star player this offseason. That way, the championship countdown clock could start in earnest immediately.
I’m reminded of this lyric from a song called “The Company Dime” by The GetUp Kids: “But in the end, one star player doesn’t save the team.”
How do the NY Knicks become the league’s next Superteam this summer?
I outlined what the Knicks roster could look like with Lillard and Julius Randle spearheading things. It’s a strong squad, but it doesn’t scream “prohibitive favorite.”
If we’re going to give up RJ Barrett, which Ian Begley has said would be a requirement in a Lillard deal, the idea should be to win a few championships right now. You do that by building as strong a team as you can.
Randle and Lillard alone don’t put you in the Eastern Conference driver’s seat, but a starting lineup that featured Mitchell Robinson and Kawhi Leonard alongside Randle and Lillard would be interesting.
Here I outline all the steps to make this happen.
