New York Knicks: 5 under-the-radar free agents – Duncan Robinson

Robinson was thought to be one of the breakout stars of the Orlando Bubble in 2020. He was a key starter on the Miami Heat team that made a stunning run to the NBA finals, averaging 12 points per game throughout that postseason on 40 percent three point shooting. Robinson stepped up in some of Miami’s biggest games and, even though the Lakers were ultimately victorious, he was a hot commodity after the NBA finals concluded.

There was an expectation that Robinson would take another leap forward this season; and though his numbers were solid — 13 points per game on 41 percent from 3 — they did not constitute a big improvement from 2020. It didn’t help Robinson that his team as a whole also fell well below expectations but his stock value, so to speak, has taken a big tumble since last autumn.

This is good news for the Knicks, who can now sign this elite dead-eye shooter at a discount. Next season will only be Robinson’s fourth in the league and, though he didn’t show it this year, there is still room for tangible growth. Thibs has coached guys like Robinson before — think Kyle Korver, Marco Belinelli, and Mike Dunleavy— and would know how to utilize him.

We saw how cramped the floor spacing was for the Knicks in the Hawks series and a player like Robinson could go a long way in opening things up on the offensive end. He is also simply a winning player and brings a playoff pedigree that the overall roster lacked this year.
