New York Knicks: What Coaching Tier is Tom Thibodeau? – Tier E

Tier E: In Hot Water

  • James Borrego (Charlotte Hornets)
  • Larry Drew (Cleveland Cavaliers)
  • Luke Walton (Sacramento Kings)

This is easily the worst tier to be in, but it’s got to be included to separate all coaches in the NBA. I will point out that Borrego did get the Hornets to the play-in game, so he’s probably in the best situation of these three.

Larry Drew has been an assistant for the majority of his coaching career but did have three winning seasons in Atlanta from 2010 to 2013. Since then, his only two full seasons as a head coach have resulted in less than 20 wins.

Walton meanwhile has never had a winning record in five years as head coach of the Los Angles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. He hasn’t always had the best talent, but as De’Aaron Fox continues to improve, Walton’s excuses will soon dry out.

It’s never fun pointing out the coaches that have the most troubles on the sidelines, but it’s almost clear that these three haven’t had much success and have had at least a few years to prove themselves.
