What Warriors moving up in NBA Draft lottery means for Knicks

If the Warriors land the rights to the Timberwolves’s lottery pick then they could use it to create a trade package for another star. If that were to happen, the player getting traded would be Andrew Wiggins due to his contract. The team trading with the Warriors might not want to take back Andrew Wiggins.

While he has improved his game since joining the Warriors and now knows how to play winning basketball, he still has 2 years/$65.2M left on his contract. This is were the Knicks could be in play. It first depends on how Andrew Wiggins relationship with Tom Thibodeau is now that they have been a part for a season and a half. If Thibs gives his blessing, then the Knicks have a way to upgrade the wing position. Let’s see what a potential Andrew Wiggins trade might look like.

If Bradley Beal agrees to join Golden State, then the Warriors could send Washington the rights to Minnesota’s lottery pick, James Wiseman, and Jordan Poole, along with some other compensation. Since the Wiggins’ contract would need to be moved to make room for Beal, it could be sent to New York if Washington doesn’t want him.

The Knicks would send Kevin Knox and their two 1st round picks (19th & 21st) in 2021 NBA Draft to Washington, in return they get Andrew Wiggins and Golden State’s 2021 1st round pick, 14th overall. Wiggins would be an upgrade over Knox and the Knicks would also move up in the draft.

Washington would now have three 1st round picks in this year’s draft to go with three young players: James Wiseman, Jordan Poole, and Kevin Knox. They would also have a lot of a ton of cap space to remake the roster. They don’t need to use all three 1st round picks, they could use the Knicks’ picks to facilitate a trade for a player or for picks in future drafts.

Regardless of the outcome of the NBA draft lottery, best be sure the Knicks will be ready to take advantage of the changing landscape in the NBA.
