NY Knicks: How the world has changed since their last playoff berth

NY Knicks: A rewind to pop culture in 2013
Of course, there were many huge moments in sports from 2013. Super Bowl XLVII (47) experienced a blackout before the Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers. Alabama won the 2013 College Football National Championship but lost to Auburn in the 2013 Iron Bowl on a last-second kick return. Also in College Football, Johnny Manziel took the sport by storm at Texas A&M while Jameis Winston won the Heisman Trophy.
The Boston Red Sox won the 2013 World Series in Boston, bringing joy back to the city that experienced the Boston Bombing earlier that year. A ton of other unfortunate events were tied to sport in 2013, such as Kevin Ware’s leg injury, the cheating scandals for Lance Armstrong, Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, and the criminal sagas of Aaron Hernandez and Oscar Pistorius.
In popular culture, Sony and Microsoft launched their newest video game consoles, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto V, arguably the most successful video game of all time. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X were released this past year, while GTA 6 still has not been announced (*pouts aggressively*).
Apple came out with the iPhone 5C and 5S. Twitter became a public company on September 12th, 2013, with shares selling for just $26. Twitter also introduced Vine, the wildly viral video app. Vine was short-lived, but clearly had an influence on later apps Tik-Tok.
The top blockbusters included Iron Man 3, The Wolf of Wall Street, and American Hustle. Even Sharknado was a successful film. In Television and streaming, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black exploded in popularity while Breaking Bad came to its final season.
Drake’s album “Nothing Was the Same” debuted. Miley Cyrus went crazy and popularized twer-… let’s actually not talk about that.
Selfies were the world’s biggest trend. The internet gave us the “Harlem Shake,” Gallon-Smashing, and Doge, while teaching us the many things that a Fox says.
Needless to say, the Knicks last made the playoffs when the organization, the league, and the world was very different. Let’s hope that as the world continues to change, one of the constants becomes the success of the orange and blue.
