NY Knicks: Can Luca Vildoza be an NBA point guard?

Luca Vildoza has some playmaking chops. His creativity and ability to improvise lends a hand to both his scoring and his playmaking for others – The question is how high-end are his point guard skills?

Knicks Fan TV got the chance to speak to international scout Jason Filippi from Babcock hoops  and he had this to say about Vildoza’s game:

"“He has a strong build and is a decent athlete for a Euro guard. Gritty, hard-nosed defender. Creative passer who is a good pick-&-roll player. I think he has just average natural talent but makes up for it with toughness and hard play. He has a knack for making big shots including an exciting game-winning buzzer-beater in last years’ Spanish League finals.”"

Vildoza seems like someone who won’t burn you with speed and thrive in the open court. He does project as someone who thrives in the half-court offense: An adept pick-and-roll operator who can orchestrate with the ball in the half-court.

Definitely a fit for the NY Knicks’ slow-paced offense.

It goes to show how adept the Knicks scouting team has been. Just looking at the smaller role players that they’ve brought it – They’re bringing in guys who fit the mold of the team. Guys who don’t need to adjust their game to fit in, they can play to their strengths.

It’s pretty hard to say with any confidence that Vildoza could be a starting point guard in the NBA, but who knows. Although he’s more of a passer than a scorer – The Denver Nuggets signed fellow Argentine Facundo Campazzo in the offseason to play a bench role. With Jamal Murray’s injury, Campazzo has been thrust into the starting lineup and is thriving.

So that’s the next question: Can Luca Vildoza become something more than the 15th man on the roster?
