Knicks Draft: Drew Timme could be an end-of-draft steal

If you’ve watched Gonzaga basketball this season, you’ve seen #2 for the Bulldogs dominate games. Drew Timme has been a pivotal part of the Zags’ success this season. The 6’10 big man has posted big averages: 19.0 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists all while shooting a whopping 65% from the floor. So where does Timme project to go in the draft?

Timme is a polarizing prospect who could go from anywhere in the 2nd round pick to being undrafted altogether, and here’s why: Timme isn’t very athletic for an NBA player. He’s a slower player whose lack of strong physical traits has weakened his outlook as a pro. That doesn’t mean he can’t shed those criticisms and make an impact in the league.

Timme excels at scoring around the basket. He has an incredibly soft touch from a variety of different areas within 15 feet of the basket. The shooting touch has flashed from further range (30% from 3) but is no guarantee to translate at the next level. It could very well be what makes or breaks Timme’s path to the NBA.

Drew Timme is one of the most fundamentally sound bigs in the league, and The Knicks may see someone who could bring a unique skill set to their frontcourt bench. In Gonzaga’s recent Elite 8 matchup with USC, Timme went head-to-head by consensus top-3 prospect Evan Mobley. Timme clearly embraced the challenge and finished the game with 23 points.

Timme could be there towards the back of the 2nd round by the time the Knicks are on the clock for the final time, and he could certainly provide the team with some help at center.
