The NY Knicks are potential buys ahead of the trade deadline, but they likely won’t be the only suitors for Orlando Magic forward Evan Fournier. Fournier has been one of the Magic’s core players for the better part of 7 seasons and is still only 28 years old. However, the Magic are in a precarious situation. They haven’t been very good and there isn’t a clear path for improving the team.

To make matters worse, Orlando is already committed to $118.5M in salaries for next season as Evan Fournier enters free agency. They recently committed to two young players that are recovering from serious knee injuries. Jonathan Isaac was extended over the offseason after tearing his ACL in the Bubble. Starting next season he will make $17.4M per season for the next 4 years, $69.6M in total. Markelle Fultz was extended this season right before he tore his ACL. He will be making $16.5M next season, a total of $50M over 3 seasons. So neither can be counted on at this time.

Then there are the veterans. Nikola Vucevic will be 30 years old next season and still has 2 years and $46M left on his contract. They also have Aaron Gordon on the books next season for $16.4M. Neither is going to garner much interest on the trade market.

Since the outlook for the Magic is not good, it doesn’t make sense for them to pay top dollar to keep Fournier. It would be smarter for Orlando to start their rebuild now by getting some assets in return for Fournier before he hits the open market.

When you look at the trade market for Fournier you see a lot of the same suitors as I wrote about for Buddy Hield. But the compensation shouldn’t be as high since he is about to become a free agent. Let’s take a look at what the market is for Fournier to understand what the Knicks would need to offer.
