3 Reasons Why NY Knicks Fans Should Be Happy Without a Trade
The NY Knicks could wait for bought-out players
I’d almost argue that signing a bought-out free agent is better than trading for someone. Hear me out here. If the NY Knicks were to sign a guy like Andre Drummond after he is bought out there are two major benefits to that.
First off, they don’t have to deal with his ridiculous salary and can sign him to a deal of choice. In addition, he would add an offensive dimension to the center position. Something the Knicks don’t have. While Mitchell Robinson (when healthy), Nerlens Noel, and Taj Gibson have all had productive seasons for the most part, their games are strictly defensive-oriented and it limits the scoring on a nightly basis.
Another reason why buy-outs outweigh trades is that they keep the chemistry of the team as a whole at a lower risk. When you think of the likely guys on the roster who would be traded names like Alec Burks, Reggie Bullock, Nerlens Noel, and Frank Ntilikina. In this stage of the season where the Knicks have found ways to win games in the home stretch, those four names have all had some sort of impact on the positive play of the team.
While the potential trade may look good on paper, you don’t know how it would necessarily affect the team internally. Tom Thibodeau has had a huge impact on the roster – The team is currently 4th in the NBA in defensive rating. Who knows how long it would take to replace someone in the rotation with a different piece. While this could apply to a signed free agent as well, you don’t necessarily lose a player in the process, you’re only adding another ingredient to an already strong recipe and seeing if it makes the final product better.
