Obi Toppin’s Role Player Comp: Derrick Jones Jr.

Most fans would be disappointed for Toppin’s career to land in this range. The Knicks are, and should, expect much more than a bench role from their 2020 lottery pick.

While this option does represent a lower tier of his career potential, filling the role of a player like Derrick Jones Jr. would allow the former Dayton superstar to carve out a long and productive NBA career.

Despite doing undrafted in 2016, Jones Jr. has established himself as one of the premier athletes in the league. His high-flying antics have led to a career full of amazing dunks, posters, and big plays. The 2020 Slam Dunk Contest champion has also learned how to use his tremendous athleticism and leaping ability in other facets of the game. He has developed into a very capable defender and a solid rebounder.

While his career averages sit at just 6.9 points and 3.7 rebounds over his four-year professional career. His PPG average has also surpassed eight in each of the past two seasons.

The most glaring trait that Jones Jr. lacks is a consistent three-point shot. His 29% career mark is far too poor for him to thrive in the modern NBA. Should he ever develop this skill, he would instantly become the type of “3-and-D” player that every team in the league covets.

Toppin’s scouting report seems to indicate that he is a more polished offensive player, who is also more of a defensive liability. However, in this scenario, the Knicks would land a phenomenal athlete, a great finisher, a good defender, and a solid bench option with the skillset to fill in as a starter as needed.
