Knicks’ Best All-Star Appearances: The Top 3

And then there were three. What’s left? Two New York Knicks who could have won MVP for their performances had it not been for a couple of other guys having ungodly nights are still to come. You also have the one Knick who won All-Star MVP since fans started voting.

3. Carmelo Anthony, 2013

It is not unprecedented for a player from the losing squad to win All-Star Game MVP and Melo certainly had a strong case in this 2013 masterpiece. Anthony had 26 points on 8/14 shooting from the floor to lead the Eastern Conference team. On top of that, he led the entire game in total rebounds with 12. Chris Paul’s 20 and 15 gem on 70% shooting prevented Melo from bringing home the MVP, but 2013 was definitely his strongest All-Star night as a Knick.

2. Bob McAdoo, 1977

In the first All-Star game after the ABA/NBA Merger, Ol’ Bobby Mac (No one called him that) had himself a night. McAdoo played a whopping 38 minutes and grabbed himself a 30 burger. Add in his 10 rebounds,  3 assists, 2 steals, and 1 blocked shot and you have an MVP-caliber box score. The fact that the Eastern Conference lost the game isn’t even the reason McAdoo didn’t win the MVP award that night because the MVP also game from the losing squad.

No, it was Julius Erving playing even more out of his mind that stood in McAdoo’s way. The Good Doctor (No one calls him that either) also had 30 points on a better shooting percentage, but he also had more rebounds, assists, and steals.

So how on God’s Green Earth did the Eastern Conference lost that night? They ran into the Four Horseman off the bench for the Western Conference Squad: Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, Rick Barry, Bob Lanier, and Phil Smith all had great nights off the bench.

1. Walt Frazier, 1975

He is loquacious and gregarious. He is amusing and beguiling. He is zany and waggish. He also had the greatest All-Star performance of the voting era for the New York Knicks in the very first game to feature such a thing.

On January 14, 1975, Walt Clyde Frazier won the All-Star Game MVP in a 108-102 win for the Eastern Conference. He edged out Tiny Archibald for total points in the game, 30-27. Tack on 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals, and you have all the makings of an MVP.

Even without the MVP award, Frazier’s 1975 All-Star Game might still have been number one on our list.
