New Orleans Julius Randle vs Today’s Knicks Julius Randle

In 2018-19, Julius Randle signed with the New Orleans Pelicans and had his best season yet.

Randle scored a career-high 21.4 points per game to go along with 8.7 rebounds per game, his highest rebounding total since his first full season with the Lakers.

He averaged 3.1 assists per game and had the most field goals attempts of his career with 14.2. Julius also shot the ball 52% from the field and 34% from three, two respectable numbers.

He started 49 of the 73 games he played that season.

His scoring on the Pelicans is very similar to the rate he has been scoring at this year. In New Orleans, he shot just about 15 shots at 52%. This season he is shooting just about 17 shots at 48%.

An argument could be made that he shot the ball better in New Orleans, but this season he is averaging 1.8 more points per game.

Part of that is Randle’s improved three-point shooting. This season he’s shooting the ball 6% better from beyond the arc on almost two more attempts per game compared to his season on the Pelicans.

Randle is averaging 10.9 total rebounds this season as opposed to 8.7 in New Orleans. Interestingly, he’s averaged more offensive rebounds on the Pelicans than he has this season, however, this season he’s averaging 9.5 defensive rebounds per game compared to the 6.5 he averaged two seasons ago.

While he slightly improved his distribution, averaging .5 more assists per game compared to his time in L.A., he was still nowhere near the passer and playmaker we see today in New York.

It is of note that in New Orleans he played just over 30 minutes per game, about six minutes fewer than this season.
