Knicks trade for JJ Redick: 20% Chance

The league interest around JJ Redick began to circulate around 3 weeks ago and multiple teams were rumored to have interest in the Pelicans’ guard, including the Knicks.

The 36-year-old Redick has had a down year for the Pelicans, shooting a career-worst 37.7% from the field and 36.8% from 3. Redick has been one of the game’s best 3-point shooters for over a decade now, and perhaps a change of scenery would reinvigorate him.

The Pelicans are in many ways in a similar spot to the Knicks, where they are trying to simultaneously build around a young core of players while fighting to sneak into the playoffs.

Redick currently only averages 18 minutes per game — he’s certainly expendable. The fit just doesn’t seem right in New Orleans.

Redick isn’t the best defender, and he’s not the quintessential Tom Thibodeau player. However, the depth of having Redick could prove to be valuable down the line.

As it stands now, it’s hard to find a spot in the rotation for Redick. Derrick Rose, Immanuel Quickley, and Alec Burks all play significant minutes off of the bench for the Knicks.

The Knicks as a team are 20th in the NBA in 3-point percentage. The real problem is that the team is 29th in 3-point attempts per game. The Knicks actually have a close-to-league-average percentage from deep, but it’s the lack of looks they get on offense that has hampered them.

I’m not sure Redick exactly answers that problem for them. If anything, the Knicks need more shot-creators and better playmaking than they do spot-up shooters.

Redick could very well become a good depth piece for the team to have should one of their guards go down. The cost of acquiring Redick would be nothing more than a conditional 2nd round pick, so the price is cheap. However, I’m not sure Redick fits the team’s needs right now, and Redick’s playing time may actually decrease from his minutes on the Pelicans. I don’t think a trade for Redick is very likely.
