Could the Scott Perry – Victor Oladipo connection pay dividends for the Knicks?

The Kristaps Porzingis trade, the Knicks’ “Plan B” 2019 offseason strategy, and Rose’s first offseason in free agency have all contributed to the current abundance of cap space. As a result, the orange and blue are rumored to be connected with any free-agent to be or star that might want out of their current situation. Victor Oladipo, who was already traded from the Pacers to the Rockets earlier this season, may be on the move once again.

Perry drafted Oladipo back in 2013, and even though Oladipo was previously repped by Rose, Perry could be a key voice in the decision to trade for the former All-NBA standout. The addition of Oladipo to the Knicks could also improve the team’s chances of making the postseason. As Hoops Habit’s Chipper Murphy writes, Oladipo can offer major support for Randle, who has been carrying the majority of the offensive load.

"Not to play minutes police, but Julius Randle has earned a rest. He’s been in the top two in minutes per game all season long, and he’s played 35 minutes or more in 22 of 28 games this season. But to score points, Thibodeau hasn’t had much of a choice. Without Randle, the offense is anemic. According to Cleaning the Glass, the Knicks score a measly 106 points per 100 possessions without their best player on the court. That’s almost identical to the offensive rating for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota has the most losses in the NBA with a record 6-20."

The Knicks would obviously have to weigh long-term health, talent upside, and future cap space if they do decide to pull the trigger on Oladipo. Oladipo is currently nursing a foot injury and is less than a full year removed from a quadriceps injury that made him miss most of the 2018-2019 season. However, if they do it would be a sign that Perry’s days in New York are not over.
