Knicks: Outlook for the offense

The Knicks offensive skill set tends to lean towards isolation rather than the assist end of the spectrum. Julius Randle and RJ Barrett certainly are isolation players and not the heart of the Knicks’ Defense.

Quickley and Payton are very capable on both ends of the floor. Randle is already a capable three-point shooter, and when Barrett’s nerves settle down, he will once again be a treat from behind the arc. The New York Knicks’ offense is capable of being in the top half of the NBA if they utilize better ball movement and more 3 point attempts.

Dell Curry, the Hornets color man, and father of current NBA players Steph and Seth Curry had this to say about Bradley Beal’s isolation scoring exploits. ‘Beal’s scoring can keep you in a game… but when you’re scoring like that you are freezing the other guys out. It’s a rhythm game and the other guys lose their rhythm’, (and don’t shoot well). This can easily apply to the Knicks ISO offense, as well.

To win, you don’t need to score 110 points, you just need to outscore your opponent. In fact, defense is probably more important than offense because it takes greater sacrifice, basketball IQ, and determination. Dedicated defensive players who can score are hard to come by. Bullock, Payton, Robinson, and Quickley are these types of players. More assists must be provided by the PGs and more touches for Bullock and Mitch.

A house is built on its foundation. Tom Thibodeau’s foundation is defense and his foundation is looking very sound. But the design of the structure must also accommodate its inhabitants, not just those who occupy the penthouse. (Those getting most of the shots.) Let’s hope a revamped offense that stresses movement, multiple touches, and uncontested threes are coming to MSG in the near future.
