Obi Toppin best college games: Dayton vs. North Florida, 12/30/2019
After winning 9 of their first 10 games, both Obi Toppin and Dayton began to stumble a bit. They lost to Colorado, then beat Grambling despite Toppin tallying a season-low 8 points in 28 minutes. The team needed a jolt of energy.
The young power forward responded with his highest-scoring output of the entire year, putting up 31 points in just 33 minutes of play. He shot 15-24 from the field, absolutely dominating the paint and seemingly scoring at will.
Dayton won by 18 points, and they didn’t record another loss for the rest of the season.
Toppin’s efficient 31 points on 24 shots aren’t out of the ordinary for him, it’s actually a common occurrence. Throughout the entire season, Obi Toppin had more points than shot attempts in 30 of his 31 games played.
The Knicks ranked 25th in the NBA in field goal percentage last season, often falling behind in games because of an inability to match opposing teams shot-for-shot. Toppin should be a huge help in that department, assuming that his precise scoring translates like it’s supposed to.
New York also ranked 29th in total points per game, averaging just 105.8 per night. Including this game against North Florida, Toppin had five contests where he scored at least 25 points. He should also help the Knicks relieve some of their offensive woes almost immediately, both right away and in future seasons.
Toppin almost certainly won’t come into the NBA averaging 20+ points per game as he did in college, but his skill of finding easy buckets should be a welcome addition to the team.
