5) Best free agent power forwards: Carmelo Anthony

I suppose I’m cheating a little with this one. While there are players who will probably demand bigger paydays and have more gas left in their tanks, one of the most intriguing forwards on the market for Knicks fans is Carmelo Anthony.

Contract: I wouldn’t expect Anthony to sign for much more than the league minimum. He will be focused on finding the right fit more than the biggest payday. While he has said that he hopes to return to Portland, it’s possible New York becomes a landing spot with his connection to Leon Rose and perhaps as a add-on if the team acquires his friend Chris Paul.

Game: I mean, we all know what ‘Melo offers at this point in time. After fighting against playing at the position best suited for his game, he flourished at power forward for Portland last season. The 35-year-old proved he can still be a lethal shot-maker, shooting 43 percent from the field, his best performance since leaving the Knicks after the 2016-17 season. He also connected on 38.5 percent of his threes, best since 2013-14.

Fit: For Anthony to re-join the Knicks, he would need to come with a clear understanding of his role as a veteran leader who can provide shooting along the wing. He is no longer a go-to scorer, and he would have to defer to the younger players. Of course, if he were to come alongside Chris Paul, the dynamic changes a bit. But his role is still as a complementary piece rather than a lead scorer at this point in time.
