3) Christian Wood

Teams with interest in Detroit Pistons free agent Christian Wood believe the young forward is a top target for the New York Knicks, according to Ian Begley of SNY.

Begley reported back in March that some within the Knicks front office were “enamored” with Wood. It makes sense to believe they would consider him an option this offseason.

Wood is trying to turn a breakout season with the Pistons into a big payday in a tight market. The 25-year-old forward blossomed into a stats machine after Andre Drummond was shipped out of Detroit. Over 16 games before the season was abruptly shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, he averaged 21.6 points and 9.1 rebounds, while shooting 40.6 percent from three on four attempts per game.

Having success over such a small sample size could give teams pause in handing out a large, multi-year contract to Wood. Knicks fans have PTSD when thinking about their favorite team signing players to lavish contracts based on limited success.

However, Wood is a modern big man who is uniquely available on the market at a young age since he went undrafted out of UNLV. With plenty of cap space and a need for a floor-spacing big to put next to Mitchell Robinson, if the Knicks can find a trade partner for Julius Randle, signing Wood could be a prudent move.
