Are these the new city edition jerseys for the New York Knicks?

A picture of what could be the 2020-21 city edition jersey for the New York Knicks was leaked online Friday night. And if you trust the comments on social media – which you should always do with caution – fans are not excited about the look.

Subway token: Since the mid-nineties, the Knicks have been obsessed with finding a way to make a subway token work as a logo.

In 1996, they released an alternate logo with the team initials “NYK” inside a circle with blue and silver trim. Before MetroCards and contactless payments, New Yorkers actually dropped a coin to pay for the right to wait excessive amounts of time on a subway platform. I suppose the symbolism is appropriate for Knicks fans.

While it’s unclear if the leaked photo is legitimate, the concept seems to follow a similar theme to the other city edition jerseys being leaked across the league, as teams expand their color palette.

If accurate, the Knicks appear to be going down the subway token path again with a circle surrounding the player’s number on the front of the jersey. The text within the circular border reads, “City Never Sleeps New York Knicks.”

Return to Black: Fans have been clamoring for the Knicks to bring back the black trim made popular in the nineties. The latest leaked jersey appears to be all black with an orange and blue gradient along the sides and in the lettering of the text on the jersey.

This would represent the third city edition uniform released by the Knicks since Nike started its licensing partnership with the NBA. The previous two versions used navy blue as the alternate colorway. People often confuse the blue jerseys with white lettering and orange trim as city editions, but those are technically “statement” jerseys. The days of one home uniform and one away uniform are long gone.

Return to play: City edition jerseys are usually worn only on special occasions throughout the regular season. Whichever uniform the Knicks are wearing, it appears they will play their first regular season game since last March either in late December or January.

The NBA and player’s association are still negotiating over when the season will begin and how many games will be played.
