Potential Knicks free agent targets: Dallas Mavericks

This was the toughest team to identify a free agent target for the Knicks. Maybe it’s because there are so many ex-Knicks on the team. Maybe since the Kristaps Porzingis trade, anything to do with the Mavericks just feels wrong.

There are three impending unrestricted free agents on Dallas’ roster: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Courtney Lee, and JJ Barea. Tim Hardaway Jr. has a player option (been there, twice). Josh Reaves and Antonius Cleveland are both restricted free agents.

I suppose this slide will focus on why there isn’t a suitable free agent target from Dallas.

Neither Courtney Lee nor JJ Barea make any sense. Both players are in the waning years of their careers and will look for specific roles on contending teams.

That leaves Kidd-Gilchrist. The former number two overall pick could be an intriguing buy-low prospect, but the Knicks really don’t need another young player who seems more on the decline than ready to turn things around. Although, he is the best defensive option on this list.

Next. Tom Thibodeau's history with player development. dark

Overall, I would say it’s unlikely any of the Mavericks free agents find their way to New York this offseason.
