Jason Kidd is making a case for the New York Knicks head coaching position.

When Jason Kidd’s name was added to the list of New York Knicks coaching candidates, many fans thought it was for a token interview, one of eleven names jockeying for what will eventually become Tom Thibodeau’s job. However, it seems the Hall-of-Fame point guard is making a strong case for himself.

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, Kidd “wowed” the Knicks front office with a “great interview,” presumably referring to the three-hour second interview that was granted to each of the 11 reported candidates. This follows up another New York Post report last week that said Kidd was the “long-shot threat” to Thibs.

Despite the impressive performance by the former Knicks point guard, Berman notes that Thibodeau remains the front-runner for the job, with his relationship to Knicks president Leon Rose and senior vice president William Wesley, along with his allegiance to the agency that ties them all together, CAA, providing him with a clear edge.

Ian Begely of SNY also puts Thibodeau as the odds-on favorite to land the lead role with the Knicks, but wrote earlier today that Kidd, along with Mike Woodson, are “highly regarded by influential people at Madison Square Garden.” Begley also notes that former Brooklyn Nets coach Kenny Atkinson has strong internal support within the Knicks organization.

Could Jason Kidd become a top assistant to Tom Thibodeau?

If the Knicks end up hiring Thibodeau, it’s possible some of the other candidates could be considered as top assistants, with Mike Woodson’s name most commonly attached to that idea.

For Kidd, who is currently an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers, it’s hard to believe he would be looking to make a lateral move from a team with championship aspirations to a team at the bottom of the standings.

He was hired by the Lakers last July, so it would seem like a quick jump to make without improving his title.

The Knicks are expected to make their final decision in the next few weeks, which will end a prolonged process that seems destined to land on the name many have believed to be the favorite since February.
