Unrestricted free agents with CAA connections: Carmelo Anthony

If you got to this point in the article, you had to see the hints right? I’m sure the “7 unrestricted free agents” tipped readers off to this player. Carmelo Anthony symbolizes the CAA connection to the Knicks. It’s so obvious that it would almost be shocking if it didn’t come to fruition.

Since Leon Rose’s hire, rumors have been flooding of a potential Melo return. Melo didn’t leave New York on the greatest terms, so it only seems right to let him finish his last dance in Madison Square Garden.

The biggest questions are: 1) What’s next, and 2) What’s Melo’s role?

Signing the former scoring champion definitely means the team is looking to win now. The Knicks would need to find a way to trade for other superstars, perhaps a Chris Paul or someone in that regards. Bringing Melo might mean that some young players will be dealt for win-now veterans.

At the same time, there needs to be more clarity on Melo’s role. Asking him to be the Melo of 2012-13 is a pipe dream. Asking him to be a full-time starter is probably too much. The Knicks need to find out if Melo’s willing to accept a complementary role on the team.
