NY Knicks: Ranking the expanded list of coaching candidates
Knicks coaching candidates: Pat Delany
Pat Delany has built his NBA resume as an assistant coach under former Knicks assistant Steve Clifford. Over the past six seasons, Delany has worked with Clifford in Orlando (2018-2019) and Charlotte (2014-2018). Before attaching himself to Clifford, he spent 11 seasons in the Miami Heat organization working as a video coordinator and advance scout.
The Knicks considered Delany as an assistant for David Fizdale in 2018. Fizdale and Delany forged a relationship during their time together in Miami.
In a recent ESPN article about rising assistant coaches in the league, Delany received high praise:
"“Whether it’s the Heat family or members of the Van Gundy brothers-Clifford coaching tree, Magic assistant Pat Delany has huge fans around the league. They believe there are few assistants with greater fluency of the NBA game. Clifford certainly agrees, and he entrusts Delany with control of the Magic’s late-game strategy. If Delany doesn’t receive an interview this offseason, the time is not far off.”"
It is refreshing to see the Knicks are considering assistants widely respected throughout the league. There was some worry that Knicks president Leon Rose might pick favorites in choosing whom to interview, but he is clearly casting a wide net.
