Projecting the Knicks’ 2021 starting center: Mitchell Robinson

It’s crazy to think Mitchell Robinson has only started 26 games for the Knicks over his first two seasons with the team. Entering his third year, it’s time to give him the full-time starting duties.

Depending on how the league adjusts league minimum criteria, Robinson might have broken Wilt Chamberlain’s single-season FG% record in 2019-20. We have all seen the videos of him practicing his perimeter shot. If he can somehow extend his range beyond the immediate area surrounding the basket, he has the potential to be a dominant big man in the modern NBA.

If the Knicks can add LaMelo Ball to their backcourt, it’s tantalizing to think of the lobs that would rain down from the Garden ceiling. It would be appointment-made television to watch Ball and Mitch wreck havoc on opposing defenses. For that reason alone, I hope the Knicks find a way to draft the playmaking brother of Lonzo Ball.

While it’s not a perfect lineup, trying to force Julius Randle between Mitchell Robinson and Danilo Gallinari, I think the Knicks will look to add shooting and versatility to mix their lineups with Ball and Barrett in the backcourt. Plus, who knows how long Randle stays in New York.
